Dubai Police have foiled an attempt to smuggle 500 kg of cocaine into the country in what's said to be the region's largest drug seizure.

The illegal items worth more than AED 500 million in street value, were hidden within the structure of a cargo container.

The operation codenamed "Scorpion" also led to the arrest of a Middle Eastern gang member operating as an intermediary for an international drug syndicate.

Following a tip-off, the authority placed the suspect under close surveillance before raiding his place and catching him red-handed with the narcotics.
