UAE launches tech-infused Emirates ID

WAM

A new and advanced version of the national emirates ID card has been launched by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA).

The revamped design integrated with new technology is set to reduce security risks, making it difficult to copy, forge or counterfeit the national ID.

The card will sport enhanced protection of non-visible data that can be read through an e-link system with ICA, while the new embedded chip boasts a non-touch data reading feature.

It will also add data about the employer or the sponsor, and the job title of the card holder, confirmed Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Acting Director General of the ICA, in a statement.

The card, which is projected to withstand 10 years of use, will be issued after the first stage use of its electronic version.

Existing ID cards can be used until the date of expiry, after which the new generation of cards will be issued.

Conversely, a lost or damaged national ID can also be replaced with the new version upon request.

All fees and processes to apply and renew the card remain the same, confirmed Al Khaili.
