The UAE Embassy in New Delhi has launched an investigation into a cargo containing gold which was smuggled through diplomatic channels in the south Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram.

A statement from the embassy on their official Twitter handle confirmed that an investigation is underway to find out who sent cargo containing gold worth AED 7.4 million to the UAE Consulate in Thiruvananthapuram.

It also stressed that the culprits "who not only committed a major crime but also sought to tarnish the reputation of the UAE mission in India, will not be spared," adding they are working closely with the Indian authorities.

A former public relations officer at the UAE Consulate in Kerala has been detained in Thiruvananthapuram.

Following a tip-off, investigating officers in Kerala seized around 30kg of gold after it was smuggled in diplomatic baggage at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport on Sunday.
