The UAE has confirmed that the oil spill from the tanker GEM No. 2 has been contained, as authorities continue environmental remediation efforts along affected coastlines.
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure said coordination remains ongoing with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority and other relevant agencies to secure the vessel and ensure maritime safety.
According to the latest field assessments, no new oil leakage has been detected. Specialist teams are continuing repairs to damaged parts of the tanker and assessing its structural integrity to determine the safest way forward.
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said cleanup, monitoring and surveying operations are continuing in affected coastal areas, with public safety remaining the top priority.
Satellite imagery shows the remaining oil slick is concentrated off the coast of Umm Al Quwain, with limited extensions towards parts of Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman and Sharjah.
The ministry said pollution levels have declined significantly since the spill was brought under control.
Officials stressed that the temporary closure of some beaches and coastal areas is a precautionary measure intended to protect the public and support ongoing cleanup operations.
Authorities have also confirmed that fish and food products available in local markets remain safe for consumption, while Etihad Water and Electricity said proactive measures have been taken to ensure the safety of the water production system, including monitoring seawater quality at intake points, testing produced and distributed water, and verifying compliance with approved standards.
Field operations and monitoring efforts will continue as authorities work to protect maritime navigation and the marine environment.
The public is urged to follow official guidance on temporarily restricted beaches and coastal areas.
