FANR chief reviews operations at Barakah Nuclear Power Plant

Hamad Al Kaabi, Director-General of Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), reviewed operations of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant on Thursday, days after taking on the new role.

Al Kaabi was appointed on June 7.

He toured the facility, which was targeted in May by Iranian drones. The strike hit electrical infrastructure outside the plant’s inner perimeter and was described as a “flagrant violation of international law”.

Al Kaabi met the teams involved in responding to the attack and commended them for demonstrating high level of coordination, readiness and professionalism in protecting human lives and securing the facility.

He was also briefed on the operation of the four units of the plant, including planned refuelling outages and maintenance activities, and met with FANR’s team of eight Resident Inspectors permanently stationed at the Plant.

The visit underscored FANR’s continued commitment to ensuring the safe, secure and peaceful operation of the UAE’s nuclear energy programme through robust and independent regulatory oversight. and reaffirmed FANR’s commitment to maintaining a strong on-site regulatory presence at the facility.
