Ursula von der Leyen voted as new president of EU Commission

Ursula von der Leyen is the new president of the EU Commission.

The German was elected following a secret ballot among MEPs.

She will replace Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on November 1.

The centre-right defence minister received votes from more than half of the members of the European parliament.

The secret ballot took place on Tuesday evening.

Von der Leyen becomes the first woman to be elected president of the European Commission.
