Boris Johnson will be the next Prime Minister of the UK after beating Jeremy Hunt in the Conservative leadership contest.

The pair have spent the last few weeks trying to get 160,000 party members to back them.

Hunt could only manage 46,656 votes, compared to Johnson's 92,153.

Johnson will replace Theresa May, who is standing down after a revolt by Conservative MPs over her Brexit policy.

May will officially submit her resignation to the Queen on Wednesday afternoon and her successor is expected to take office shortly afterwards.

Johnson has said he is determined to take the UK out of the European Union on October 31, if necessary without a deal.
