Henry Cavill has taken to Instagram to confirm that he will not be returning as Superman in the new era of the franchise.
James Gunn took to Twitter this week to announce that he and DC Studios co-president Peter Safran have finalized a DC slate and will announce more in the new year.
Sharing the news that one of the upcoming movies would feature a Superman film set in his early days as a reporter this confirmed that Cavill would not be returning to the role.
Confirming the news on his Instagram page Cavill said "I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman."
Cavill said that he was told by the studio to announce his return in October but this was before James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired to lead DC.
"The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes."
The full DC plan is expected to be announced next year.
