The UAE should tax sugar and fizzy drinks and reduce salt in pre-prepared food. That’s the message from the Economist Intelligence Unit, who say something needs to be done to combat the Emirates’ diabetes epidemic. Clear food labelling is another suggestion. Government health-care spending on diabetes is expected to rise fourfold between 2010 and 2030. The report reveals many EU countries have already implemented this kind of taxation policy with some success.
