Lockie Ferguson took three wickets (3-49) while Trent Boult (2-45) and Matt Henry (2-58) chipped in with two wickets each.
For New Zealand, Daryl Mitchell was unbeaten on 89 off 67 balls while captain Kane Williamson struck a fluid 78 (107 balls) before retiring hurt with a hand injury.
