Joe Root’s men resumed day 5 on 55 for 3, hoping to bat out for a draw but they were dismissed for just 197 in the second innings.
Fast bowler Neil Wagner took 5-44, while Joe Denly top-scored for England with 35.
New Zealand take a 1-0 lead into the second and final match of the series, which starts on Friday in Hamilton.
