India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Sunday, defeating New Zealand in the final after a powerful batting display helped them secure the title on home soil.
The final, played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, saw India post a record 255 for 5, the highest total ever scored in a T20 World Cup final.
In reply, New Zealand were all out for 159 in 19 overs.
India’s innings was driven by an explosive top order. Sanju Samson led with 89 runs from 46 balls, smashing eight sixes and five fours.
He was supported by Abhishek Sharma, who struck a quick 52, while Ishan Kishan added a rapid 54 to push the total past the 250 mark.
Chasing the daunting target of 256, New Zealand were quickly placed under pressure as wickets fell regularly during the innings.
Indian bowlers, including Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy struck key blows to restrict the chase, leaving the Kiwis well behind the required run rate.
Despite a fighting half-century from Tim Seifert, the Black Caps were unable to keep pace with the massive target.
The victory marked a historic moment for Indian cricket, with the team securing another T20 world title and reinforcing its dominance in the format.
The tournament itself was the tenth edition, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, and featured 20 teams competing across more than 50 matches.
With the triumph in Ahmedabad, India capped a tournament in which their batting firepower and disciplined bowling proved decisive on the big stage.
