At least three people have been killed and four more injured as fires spread through forests in northern Mexico.

Around 150 firefighters have been battling to douse the blaze that has so far covered about 34,600 acres of land near the US border.

Several highways have been temporarily closed and more than 1,600 residents evacuated from their homes, officials added.

A fire near the town of Tecate was first detected on Friday afternoon, with additional fires spotted southwest of Tijuana, as well as along the Pacific coast northwest of the city of Ensenada.
