Moscow has also suspended direct passenger trains to China, after earlier restricting direct flights to the country.

On Monday, Australia also evacuated 243 of its citizens and permanent residents from Wuhan and moved them into a quarantine facility on a remote island off Australia's northwest coast.

It comes as the US plans "a handful more flights" to bring Americans home from China's Hubei province.
