UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is hopeful of getting Brexit "wrapped up" for Christmas as MPs begin voting on his withdrawal deal.

"Now is the moment to come together and write a new and exciting chapter in our national story, to forge a new partnership with our European friends, to stand tall in the world, to begin the healing for which the whole people of this country year," he told the parliament ahead of Friday's vote.

After winning a landslide victory, Johnson is confident of facing little opposition in passing the bill to implement Britain's exit from the EU.

The Bill will then be debated in more detail after Christmas, with the lower house of parliament having until January 9 to approve the legislation.
