The Lord of the Rings star is advising people not to bother reading Shakespeare, and that his plays should instead be watched live in the theatre. McKellen says that watching performers like John Gielgud live on stage inspired him to act. The X-Men actor added that reading the bards work just "reduces him to an examination subject."
