After UN sanctions, Myanmar fires general over Rohingya crisis

Myanmar military has fired one of its senior officials over the Rohingya crackdown.

The announcement comes just hours after the European Union imposed sanctions on him and six other senior officials for their role in what the UN denounced as "ethnic cleansing".

Major General Maung Maung Soe, who had already been sanctioned by the US last December, was fired on Monday for "underperformance when responding to Rohingya attacks".

The authorities added that another listed official had been "given permission to resign" last month for "underperformance".

The seven officials face asset freezes and are banned from travelling to the EU.
