Vietnam asks residents not to eat dog meat

Authorities in Vietnam's capital Hanoi have urged residents to stop eating dog meat because it hurts the city's image.

The Hanoi People's Committee said it could also help in halting the spread of diseases like rabies and leptospirosis.

More than 1,000 shops in the city offer dog and cat meat, but officials worry the practice could "negatively impact the image of a civilised and modern capital".
