India launches massive coastal defence exercise

India has launched its biggest-ever coastal defence drill.

The so-called "Sea Vigil 2019" is being carried out to test the measures that have been taken since the terror attacks of 26/11, when the attackers reached Mumbai via a sea route.

Covering the country's entire 7,500 kilometre coastline and island territories, the two-day exercise will feature simulated attacks and rouge vessels trying to penetrate defences.

Officials say the scale of the drill is unprecedented with a number of ministries and agencies involved alongside the Navy and Coast Guard, as well as fishing an coastal communities.
