Some 200 officials and health experts including by Bill Gates and World Health Organisation Director General Dr.Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus are descending on Abu Dhabi on Wednesday to map out a plan to eradicate preventable infectious diseases that are still killing people across the world.
The event, called Reaching the Last Mile - Mobilising Together to Eliminate Infectious Disease, is being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, together with the Carter Centre and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
United Nations Secretary General António Guterres is also set to deliver an address.
Tariq Al Otaiba, Senior Associate at the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Court, says global efforts have led to significant progress.
Other diseases to be addressed at the event include river blindness and elephantiasis.
Al Otaiba also outlines the UAE’s efforts in eliminating one particular deadly but preventable disease: polio.
Otaiba says the UAE’s commitment to the cause goes back decades.
