Plans to regulate social media content in India met with problems

Plans to regulate social media content in India have been met with criticism by an Asian lobby group, which includes Facebook and Google as members.

Regulations could mean that any content deemed to be unlawful being shared on Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter would have to be removed within 24 hours, according to a draft proposal by India's technology ministry.

Internet companies stated that they supported a crackdown on malicious content and fake news, but that a blanket regulation would put free speech and citizens rights at risk.

According to Reuters, tech giants are planning to fight the changes being suggested in the “intermediary guidelines”.
