As Venezuelans protest, struggling Maduro seeks early parliament vote

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has proposed early parliamentary elections, in a bid to sideline opposition leader Juan Guaido's plans to overthrow him.

The opposition had earlier called for a new presidential election after the disputed vote won by Maduro last year.

"You want elections? You want early elections? We are going to have parliamentary elections," Maduro told a pro-government rally in Caracas.

This comes as a high-ranking Venezuelan general called on the armed forces to rebel against Maduro, and pledged his allegiance to Guaido.
