Army takes over security in Rio after surge in gang violence

Brazil’s army has taken control of security in Rio de Janeiro after an escalation in gang violence.

Their President Michel Temer said the government had to take drastic measures after gang violence seized control of the state.

He said the issue was comparable to ‘a cancer.’

A heavily armed battalion of the Brazilian army will supervise police and other security services.
