87% of parents don't know diet, BMI correlation

A new study found that 87 per cent of parents in the UAE did not know that diet is a crucial contributing factor to a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI).

The report by King’s College Hospital London in the UAE also revealed that 72 per cent think their child’s BMI matched the recommended BMI for their age.

Findings also showed that less than 28 per cent of the surveyed parents do not read nutrition labels found on consumable goods.

A total of 43 per cent said they don’t understand the nutritional values on them, 12 per cent think the values were unimportant and 36 per cent thought those values do not determine whether a food is healthy or not.
